Fort Morgan is situated at Mobile Bay, which is an inlet at the Gulf of Mexico. The fort played an important role during the War of 1812 and the American Civil War and is listed as a National Historic Landmark. This was our first time staying in Fort Morgan and we loved it. We stayed for over a week and enjoyed every bit of the vacation. Fort Morgan was finished in 1834 and designed by French Engineer Simon Bernard. By comparison, it seems much cleaner than other beaches, especially the Ft. Morgan area that as of yet has not been overrun with large volume condos and surf shops. There are 3 restaurants within 5 miles in either direction and plenty of single family homes and condos on Fort Morgan is a Peninsula extending to the west of Gulf Shores, and it is a wonderful place to escape when looking for something a bit more low key. Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and the area of Fort Morgan are closed to visitors for at least 10 days. Also, there is a countywide curfew in effect from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. until further notice. Tourists are barred from Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and the Fort Morgan Peninsula until Sept. 27 as residents and businesses assess damage in the aftermath of Hurricane Sally.
